Do your habits need changing?

Let’s talk about habits! We all have them, good, bad, indifferent and UGLY.

When was the last time you took an intentional look at the things you do from the minute you wake up to the moment you go to sleep?

I hear from a lot of folks I wish I had better habits but…

  • I'm a horrible procrastinator

  • I start off strong and then can't stick with it

  • I'm tired and (insert bad habit) is the only thing that makes me feel good

  • I'm just not like those green smoothie drinking, 5am workout people

Okay, cool… I call BS but also, I get what you're saying.

We can often look at habits as these big grandiose changes that need to be made, which is overwhelming as fuck, instead of approaching them little bit by little bit, ONE AT A TIME.

I recently discovered TikTok had taken over my life and become a habit that was DEFINITELY NOT serving me…In the past, I would deactivate and delete my apps but with them being tied to business I had to get creative.

I noticed the pattern was me picking up my phone and then instantly opening up the apps without thinking. My solution? Deleting the apps from my phone and only being able to access them on my desktop.

It's been 5 days and I can already see the IMMENSE impact this small shift has made in my day to day life.

Most habits follow a pattern:

  • There is a que (me picking up my phone)

  • Then a routine (immediately opening up my social media apps)

  • Followed by a reward (the dopamine hit of short entertaining videos)

  • Which led me to create a craving

You can read more about this in the book The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg.

Why is it important to know how habits work? Because that simple awareness helps us shift in small ways, which leads to big impacts!

You don't have to create a brand new habit, you can take an old habit and repurpose it by shifting one part of it.

For example:

Old habit: At 3pm everyday you go down to the bakery and get yourself a chocolate chip cookie and chai

New habit: At 3pm everyday you meet with a colleague and go for a walk around the block and catch up with each other

You are keeping the 3pm que as the reward of getting a little boost to the end of your day, you're just changing the routine.

So… How do you know if you have a habit/routine/pattern that needs interrupting?

  1. Ask yourself, 'does this habit support the vision I have for myself & my life?

  2. Does this routine leave me feeling better physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually?

  3. Is this ACTUALLY making me feel better or does it allow me to avoid uncomfortable feelings I have about my life?

If you answered NO to the first two, ask yourself 'what is a routine I can substitute for this habit & how can I best support myself to switch the pattern?'

AND if you realize this habit is helping you AVOID, then it's time for us to talk!

I can not only support you to create strong, healthy habits but address & transform the areas in your life you're avoiding.
