4 Ways to Show up Authentically on LinkedIn
Have you ever sat in front of your laptop or computer and said these things (either mentally or out loud):
I am not sure if this appropriate for LinkedIn…
I didn't go to a fancy school or work for a shiny tech company…
I don't have anything to say…
I don't want to come across as too self-promotional…
I am not that impressive and don't have any accomplishments…
I don't want to be annoying…
I'm afraid of putting myself out there and being judged…
If these are the things running through your head when you think about posting on LinkedIn, you're not alone! These are nothing else other than mindset blocks that are truly affecting your ability to authentically show (the F) up. You are giving others control on the actions you do or don’t take. When you allow people’s opinions to dictate if/when/and how you show up, you’re never going to truly show up authentically.
Authenticity thrives when you let go of the fear of judgment. Instead, focus on sharing your unique perspective, experiences, and ideas. True connections are built on authenticity, and your voice deserves to be heard. To be authentic, you have to embrace authenticity in ALL aspects of your life.
But, but, but LinkedIn is a “professional” platform, aren't there unspoken rules of what you can and cannot post?!?!
First off, what the fuck is professionalism anyways? The word professionalism has been used as a weapon against those that have been historically excluded for so long and should no longer be about conforming to an outdated mold. The world is evolving, let's challenge the notion of professionalism together. If you are being respectful, genuine, and inclusive, then in my mind you are being professional! I swear often and have posted many pictures and videos in a swimsuit or with alcohol in my hand on LinkedIn and that does not make me ANY LESS PROFESSIONAL. Anyone that is offended by it can kindly get the fuck off my page and post, cause they are not my people.
I cringe whenever I see someone post “I know this is a professional platform but I want to share something personal…” I want to yell STOP APOLOGIZING. YOU are a person, your humanity does not get checked at the door because you get on LinkedIn. In fact all that humanness influences your professional life and people will connect with your story even more when you’re not afraid to share the messy, beautiful, glorious human behind the computer.
So, by now you may be asking: Arissan how the hell do I show up authentically on LinkedIn? How do I work past my own insecurities or programming to show the f up??
Here are a few things you can do to show up authentically on LinkedIn
Reflect on your values: What matters most to you? Let your values guide your actions and content on LinkedIn.
Share your story: Be open and vulnerable about your journey, struggles, and triumphs. Your authenticity will resonate with others. Remember, turning people away from you is just as valuable & important as calling people in.
Engage authentically: Listen, respond, and contribute to discussions genuinely. Build relationships based on mutual respect and curiosity. I don’t give a fuck about the numbers, at the end of the day they don’t matter.
Embrace imperfection: Don't be afraid to show your human side. Mistakes and failures are part of growth and authenticity. Spoiler alert, people don’t care or notice as much as you think they do.
Ask yourself the following questions:
What unique perspective or expertise do I bring to the table?
How can I incorporate my personal interests and passions into my LinkedIn presence?
Am I expressing my true self, or am I holding back due to fear?
Then, I want you to go create ONE post on LinkedIn. I don’t care what it is, or what it is about. You just need to show yourself you can do it, even if your pits are sweaty, your chest is tight, and you need to take a deep breath and close your eyes when you hit post…the world will keep spinning, I PROMISE.
